We’ve been busy over here lately with various projects we’ve been working on to broaden our experience areas and improve our service offerings. One such project is utilizing and optimizing off-the-shelf consumer hardware for commodity software defined radio (SDR) reception.

The USB TV tuner dongle that we are using as a software-defined radio receiver is the Newsky TV28T, based upon the RTL2832U chipset and the E4000 tuner. In our experimentation, we have been repeating the work of the RTL-SDR subproject over at the Osmocomm SDR project.

At the time of our purchase and initial experimentation, it was not yet known if this specific tuner dongle would work for RTL-SDR, but, since its sister dongles were sold out at the DealExtreme supplier, we decided to purchase one anyway ($26 on AliExpress) and see if it would work. The list of devices known to be compatible with RTL-SDR has since been updated to include the Newsky TV28T.

The result? As it turns out, the Newsky TV28T works very well as a software-defined radio receiver using RTL-SDR and GNURadio! It will be neat to see how Osmocom’s main OsmoSDR product that they are developing turns out.
